The financial stability of a social enterprise, both short- and long-term, hinges on the strength of its business model. Once customer validation and business model viability are established, the next critical step is to assess financial feasibility through a simple analysis.

This short course will equip you with practical and actionable steps for understanding and evaluating your social enterprise’s profitability and long-term sustainability.

Professor Christina Hachikian is an adjunct Associate Professor of Strategic Management at Chicago Booth Business School. She is the Founder of Hatch Gemini and the founding executive director of the Rustandy Center for Social Sector Innovation.

Course Content

What is financial modeling and assumption
In this first module, we’ll dive into the basics of financial modeling. This course doesn’t go into super detailed modeling, but it’ll explain the main ideas and show you why good assumptions are so important.

Revenue Modeling
Here we've included some guidelines on how to determine your price and create revenue models. Delving into this may require good knowledge of microsoft excel and understanding of how your business is expected to work.

Module 2: Cost Modeling
Now that you’ve got the hang of financial modeling, let’s dive into pricing your products and services and estimating the costs involved in delivering your value proposition.

Module 3: : Unit Economics and Other Business Drivers
This module explore key business drivers especially unit-level economics, especially those investors and lenders wants to see before making investment decisions.

Module 4: Develop a compelling financial story and articulate a financial ask
Our final module focuses on how to present your business’ financials to investors in a way that clearly demonstrates feasibility and potential for growth. We will show you how to do this through two examples.
